One Big Picnic

One Big Community

One Big Picnic is an annual, volunteer-led, free community meal in Glasgow’s main square. People from all walks of life, communities and backgrounds are invited to come together to enjoy delicious food, diverse entertainment, and to mix and socialise together. Everyone is invited!

Open to everyone, this free family-friendly day out celebrates the diversity of the people of Glasgow and aims to unite those from different backgrounds.  We reach out to communities – particularly those who are often marginalised because of their immigration status, homelessness, religious and cultural background, disability, or sexual orientation. We invite them to come together in the heart of Glasgow – with the shoppers and passers-by – to share a delicious variety of free food and enjoy themselves together.

The food is served up by volunteers from Glasgow’s many faith and belief communities – all working together and united around a shared belief that everyone has the right to enjoy good food and feel part of one big community.  Many of the groups are part of the Interfaith Food Justice Network and serve free food on a regular basis through community and emergency food initiatives throughout the city.

The best community event of the year

At the fourth One Big Picnic (4th September 2022), 13 groups worked together through the Interfaith Food Justice Network to plan the event and to serve over 4600 portions of delicious free food, with all things from curries, wraps, salads, pies, sandwiches, cakes, drinks and so much more on offer! There was such a fantastic buzz as people of all backgrounds tried free food from diverse cultures, enjoyed a chat and had a go at the various craft activities, henna, face painting and the chance to try on a turban or a hijab. We not only had an array of live music from some of our city’s talented musicians, but there was also a tent where you could try out an instrument yourself, thanks to Glasgow’s musical instrument library Music Broth.

One Big Picnic is an initiative of the Interfaith Food Justice Network and is coordinated by Interfaith Glasgow.  The event is supported by numerous volunteers, community groups, funders, businesses, donors, faith communities and others.  It is a huge team effort driven by the shared desire to create a space where everyone feels truly welcome.  We hope to see you there!
